A warm welcome awaits you at one of the oldest pubs in Beverley, located halfway between the East Riding Theatre and Beverley Minster, just down from Wednesday Market.
Steeped in History, this pub was built and developed throughout the Medieval period, with some parts dating back to 1270.
The oldest-surviving timber-framed building in Yorkshire, the western end of the structure dates back to around 1270, with later additions from the 17th century (one wall dated to precisely 1671).
It was built originally as a warehouse for London merchants who were buying and shipping corn that had been gifted to Beverley Minster from the 10th century onwards.
The Reformation stripped away many of the privileges attached to the church, and the whole town went into steep decline as a result. But the building now known as the Monks Walk survived, and by 1658 it had become a pub (The George in Highgate)
